Why grinding beats leaving the stump
Leaving a stump in the ground sounds easier than dealing with it, but stumps cause more problems the longer they sit. Termites, carpenter ants, and beetles use rotting stumps as a colony base and then spread to your house, fence posts, and other trees. Stumps sprout suckers — especially mesquite and cottonwood — that you'll be cutting back forever. They are tripping hazards, mower-blade killers, and they take up planting space. Grinding solves all of this in a single visit, with no chemicals and no trenching to disturb the rest of the yard.
How deep we grind and what's left behind
We grind standard stumps about 6 inches below grade for sod or grass replacement, and 10 to 12 inches deeper if you plan to plant a new tree, pour concrete, or run hardscape over the spot. Surface roots that radiate out from the stump can be ground down on request so you have a clean, level finish. The grinding leaves a pile of mulch-like wood chips mixed with soil. You can keep that as free mulch for beds, or we can rake it into the hole and haul off the excess so the spot is ready for whatever comes next.
Replanting, sodding, or building over the spot
If you're planting a new tree, we recommend grinding deep, removing the chips entirely, and backfilling with fresh topsoil rather than the wood-chip mix — decomposing wood ties up nitrogen and slows the new tree's establishment. For sod or grass seed, the standard chip backfill works fine once it settles. For concrete pads, decks, or pavers, we grind extra deep so there's no organic material left to decompose and create a void under your hardscape. Tell us what you're planning and we'll grind to match.
